This book is about three women who are each at a turning point in their lives. Cecilia Lapthorne has spent her life in the shadow of her husband, a famous artist. Since his death her life has stood still, and she knows she has to somehow extract herself from his legacy and find a new life for herself. Overwhelmed by the expectations of her family, she sneaks away from her 75th birthday celebrations and travels to her cottage in a remote part of beautiful Cape Cod where she once spent so many happy summers. She hopes she might find the answers to her future in her past, but instead she discovers that the cottage is unexpectedly occupied. Lily, a young woman also running from family pressure has been using the empty cottage as an escape. Her parents want her to continue her medical training, but Lily knows that path isn’t for her. She finds an unexpected connection with Cecilia and a friendship develops that will ultimately help both of them. Meanwhile Cecilia’s daughter Kristin is discovering that it’s possible to be lonely inside a marriage and she is reaching breaking point. Something needs to change, but is she about to do something she is going to regret?
